General Planting Guide

Getting your new plant off to a strong start comes down to three things: water, soil, and placement.

WATERING
For the first month, water deeply twice per week. Set your hose to a slow trickle directly at the base and let it run for 20–30 minutes. Deep, infrequent watering encourages roots to grow downward rather than staying near the surface.

After the first month, reduce to once per week. In hot summer months, watch for drooping leaves as a sign your plant needs more water.

SOIL
Most plants prefer well-draining soil. If your garden holds water after rain, mix in compost or bark to improve drainage. Dig your planting hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper — planting too deep is one of the most common mistakes.

PLACEMENT
Match the plant to the light. Full-sun plants need 6+ hours of direct sunlight. Shade-tolerant plants will scorch if placed in a south-facing bed. When in doubt, check the label that came with your plant.

GETTING STARTED
1. Dig your hole — wide and shallow.
2. Remove the plant from its container and loosen any circling roots.
3. Place the root ball so the top sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
4. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and mulch around the base (keeping mulch away from the stem).
